Drawn from a webcam image of a seagull sitting on top of the Sistine Chapel smokestack. Apparently, it was also eager to find out who the next pope was. Intentionally drew this in a more subdued way than usual.
I considered the seagull roosting on top of the Sistine Chapel's chimney not only foreshadowing the papal election of Cardinal Bergolio, but his papal name too. He chose Francis after St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, who is often depicted with a bird by his side.
Now that's an intriguing perspective. I recall seeing a statue of St. Francis of Assisi with birds, now that you mention it. Maybe the seagull knew something after all?
Honestly though, I didn't draw this because I felt the seagull was a divine harbinger (I can't say whether it was or not). To me, the seagull was such an unexpected sight that I felt like drawing it on a whim.
